INGREDIENTS 350-400 gms chicken (i.e. 2 joints or half smallish chicken). 3.4 or 5 good size cloves garlic
(ajo). Bare level teasp. ground pepper. Tot of brandy (cheap loose brandy is ideal for cooking). 1 desp. Lemon juice. 50gms. flour. Salt to taste. 4 or 5 tablesps. oil for frying.

inside. Serve proceeded by a salad or accompanied with boiled rice.

Calpe is a lovely town 60 Kilometers up the coast from Alicante near the famous Rock of Ifach.
Between Torrevieja and Alicante lies Elche the town of the Date Palms which celebrates the "Mystery of Elche between the 10th and 22nd August. At Denia between the 12th and 18th August, Cocentaina between the 10th and 12th August, and Jijona between the 23rd and 25th August are festivals of various kinds.
At Orihuella (North of Torrevieja) between the 15th and 22nd there are big livestock fairs and championships in which the best animals are judged. There are also concerts, folklore parades, firworks and bullfights.
EATING OUT IN TORREVIEJA
Meson Ricio is to be found going out to Torevieja towards Cartagena on the lefthand side and is an old style Spanish Restaurant. Very good but rather expensive. The Meson Punta Prima about 6 Kilometers out of Torrevieja also on the Cartagena road on the beach, is similar to Meson Ricio, Very good but rather pricey. Another restaurant you might try is at Cabo Riog, 8 Kilometers out of Torrevieja on the lefthand side of the Cartagena road, also situated on the beach in a delightful positon. The food is very good but again it is not cheap.
LOCAL INFORMATION - TORREVIEJA
Torrevieja street market specialises in leather goods, including jackets, shoes and lace, and is held on Friday of each week.
Santa Paulo street market is held on a Monday each week and is 30 kilometers up the coast from Torrevieja and where you will find particularly good bargains in shoes and sandles. There is also a street market at Oruehella (28 Kilometers north of Torrevieja) on a Tuesday. Slicante street market which is 52 Kilometers is held on a Saturday. For those of you who like to keep up to date with the news from England, English newspapes (a day late) are sold at one of the local newsagents which is called in Spanish "Papeleria" Baeza in the Calle de Maria Pardol in Torrevieja. At La Zenia, 8 Kilometers out of Torrevieja on the Cartagena road on the left hand side is the La Zenia Hotel which during the Summer has free dancing every evening, also a restaurant. Incidentally this a hotel the package tour companies use. There is also next door to the La Zenia hotel the La Zenia restaurant (which has nothing to do with the La Zenia hotel). This has a very wide and extensive and reasonable priced menu including many English items and is open every night and run by an English couple. At weekends there is a Dinner Dance to a Spanish group at an inclusive price of around 225 pesetas per person.
Shop opening hours in Torrevieja during the Summer vary but most open between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 4.30. p.m. and 9.00 p.m.
The local calor gas supply in Torrevieja, and is butano, is to be found at Calle General Sanjurja.
There are several Banks in Torrevieja which display the E for Eurocheque and are the best place for changing money from an exchange rate point of view. For those of you with Eurocheque credit cards, you can draw a maximum of £30 each day (assuming you have at least £30 in your Bank account at home of course). Don't forget you will need your passport whenever you change money.
For your interest, wages in Spain are generally very low with a shop assistant earing around £7. per week, a mechanic in a garage about £20 per week and waiters in hotels and cafes £7. a week in winter and up to £25 per week in Summer (and they have to work extremely long hours, 7 days a week in the Summer to achieve that wage).
If you want to fish in Torrevieja harbour when you are on holiday you will need a licence obtainable from the local Council Offices. Incidentally you do not get a licence to fish outside the harbour. For a reasonable quiet beach (3 Kilometers long) try La Mata which is 7 Kilometers up the coast from Torrevieja and is right by the local Swedish Colony. Avoid Sundays which tends to make the beach rather crowded with the local Spanish.
There is a good local garage which is on the main road going into the town on the lefthand side called San Cristobal. The petrol to use is Super Grade, avoid the cheaper Regular which will do your car no good at all.
There is a cinema in the Centre of Torrevieja called the Nuevo Cinema and is to be found third on the right after the traffic lights. The cinema shows only films in Spanish but there are occasionally variety shows.
There is quite a good and reasonably priced supermarket on the corner opposite San Cristobal Garage alled Alimentacion and which sells a numbeer of proprietory English brands of foods.
JOKE OF THE MONTH
A small boy was walking past some prison gates when a man came out.
The man rushed up to the boy waving his arms and shouting "I'm free, I'm free.
That's nothing replied the boy scornfully I'm four

There are holes in the sky where the rain gets in but they are ever so small, that's why rain's so thin.
